Emancipation Proclamation Stamp

Gail Anderson was commissioned by the US Postal Service to design a commemorative stamp celebrating the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 2013. Gail and USPS art director Antonio Alcala collaborated with Jim Sherraden of Nashville’s famed Hatch Show Print to produce the final version of the stamp, which was also made into 5000 letterpress posters. The initial run of 40,000,000 stamps sold out (!) and the USPS released an additional edition of 10,000,000. Gail now serves on the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee for the USPS as design subcommittee chair, and will tell you all about postage stamps if you have the time.

“Working with Gail was easy, productive, enlightening, and rewarding. She brought charm, humility, and enthusiasm to the assignment, nimbleness to her investigations, and intelligence, sophistication, and beauty to her final design. Working side-by-side with Gail is one of the highlights of my career.”
